In December, 2013, Herbal Medics sent its resident herbalist (Sam Coffman) to the Rio Indio region a few hours upriver from San Juan de Nicaragua. His mission was three-fold:
- To briefly live with and begin documentation of the work of Narciso, an 83 year old medicine man. Narciso has been living and helping the local population for over 50 years. He knows a wealth of information about the medicinal plants in the region and his success stories with chronic and acute illness are well-known to all in this area, including orthodox doctors.
- To coordinate with the Rama Indians for work to be done in 2014 (including herbal clinics, water purification and 12 volt power generation) at their village.
- To assess the slow sand system installed in November by a 4-person Herbal Medics team and check with the clinical director on its use and effectiveness for the clinic. as well as other needs. For instance, Herbal Medics may place a solar-powered inline pump into the system in 2014 in order to increase water pressure for the clinic as well.
